On Wednesday, March 24, the San Bernardino International Airport Authority voted to approve the purchase of two Ford Hybrid Explorers at $37,049.51 per vehicle, which will replace two Ford Crown Victorias that make up the airport’s security fleet.
Diamond Chevrolet in San Bernardino provided the airport’s security department with an all-electric vehicle for testing as an option to the gasoline-electric vehicle. After testing and researching the all-electric vehicle option, staff determined the test vehicle would ultimately not be a feasible option for the security department and that some of the newer model electric vehicles were delayed for manufacturing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Staff ultimately decided on the purchase of the hybrids from Fairview Ford in San Bernardino, which provided the lowest bid.
SBD has nine vehicles in its security fleet.
The commission also approved the purchase of two SkyMark Refuelers 15,000 gallon AQMDTier 4 Jet-A trucks not to exceed total of $1.92 million.
The airport will pay for the trucks under an 84-month lease agreement.
