Cuca’s Mexican Food, 3644 Highland Ave., is temporarily closed after a kitchen fire on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

According to General Manager Evelyn Arce, at about 4:40 p.m. on Nov. 11 a batch of tamales caught fire and quickly spread throughout the kitchen.

Employees and customers were in the restaurant at the time and evacuated. One person received second-degree burns on one arm but will recover.

Arce says the company is grateful and amazed no one was killed. They are also grateful to the firefighter who helped put out the fire and limit the damage.

Cuca’s is working with its insurance company and on repairing the damage but is unsure when the restaurant will be able to reopen. Arce hopes they will reopen before Christmas, as the holidays are a busy time for the restaurant, which sells holiday orders of tamales.
