Pet Empire owners Javier and Liz Davalos celebrated their first year in business with family, friends and a ribbon cutting on Oct. 13.
Javier and Liz opened their pet shop about a year ago with a focus on being a resource and educational support for improving nutrition for the area’s pets. Javier is also a “pet whisperer” and an expert on pet behavior.
The celebration was hosted by Highland Area Chamber of Commerce and was well attended with a particularly strong presence from American Legion Post 421.
According to Post 421 1st Vice Cmdr. Bill Chaddick, the post was there out of gratitude and appreciation of an honest man, Javier.
Chaddick shared that the post had recently lost a $6,000-plus deposit when a member absentmindedly left it on the roof of his car and drove off. Javier found the deposit, returned it and refused a reward.
“We were very worried about it and are very grateful,” Chaddick said. “We came to show our appreciation with our patronage.”
Several other pet businesses also came out in the rain to show their support and help in pet adoption, micro-chipping and other services.
