Lions tree

Highland Lions Club members Art Ruiz, Henry Plows, Josie Bingochea and Rachel Palacios prepare a Santa for Seniors Christmas tree at Round Table Pizza Clubhouse where guests can leave gift donations for Highland seniors.

The Highland Lions Club has kicked off a gift drive asking residents to be a “Santa for Seniors” by leaving gifts at a Christmas Tree in the lobby of Round Table Pizza Clubhouse, 27961 Highland Ave.

The tree was put up by the club and decorated with cards indicating the needs of seniors living at Highland Palms senior living community. Each card lists an item and, when appropriate, size.

The club hopes to be able to present each of the 92 Highland Palms seniors a gift with the help of the community.

The gifts will be collected until Sunday, Dec. 23.

The club is also preparing to sponsor a student speech contest that will select a Highland student to send to the Lions Club International annual contest.

The club has opened the contest to students from San Gorgonio and Citrus Valley high schools and applications will be made available at the schools shortly.

The club plans to select seven speakers to compete in the local contest with the winner being sponsored by the club to compete at advancing levels.

Each speaker selected to compete will receive $25 while the winner will earn $125. According to club organizers, a student who advances to state level has the potential to win up to $22,000 in college scholarships.

The Highland Club is still organizing the details for its contest, which must be held by Feb. 25.

The club is also selling tickets for its New Year Pancake Breakfast to be held 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Applebee’s restaurant, 4070 Highland Ave. Proceeds of the fundraiser will be used to purchase winter clothing for local elementary students.

For tickets or more information on the club’s events call (626) 472-3568.
