On Sunday, July 11, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department investigators discovered the body of an unidentified male victim and arrested a murder suspect after a 6.5-hour standoff during which the suspect had barricaded himself inside a RV parked behind the Food 4 Less at Highland Avenue and Victoria Avenue.

According to the sheriff’s department, Highland deputies responded to the RV after receiving a report of a suspicious circumstances at about 9 a.m. When the first deputies arrived, the suspect, later identified as Highland transient Ronald Gene Koerber, 56, closed the front windshield blind and barricaded himself in the RV for unknown circumstances.

The department closed off the area and deployed a Specialized Enforcement Detail (SED) team and two crisis negotiators in an attempt to convince the suspect to peacefully surrender.

After several hours of attempted communication with Koerber and shortly before 3:30 p.m. the SED deployed gas into the RV. The suspect then exited the RV, holding a knife and attempted to flee on foot. The SED apprehended the suspect and he was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

After the arrest deputies searched the RV and found an unidentified deceased male inside. According to a sheriff's department press release, investigators believe the victim had been in the RV for several days.

An autopsy will be conducted to identify the victim and the cause of death.

Upon release from the hospital, Koerber will be booked for murder.
