On Saturday, Nov. 9, a Rialto driver was arrested after fleeing a fatal traffic collision in San Bernardino. One driver died at the scene and a child passenger is in critical condition.
According to a San Bernardino Police Department press release, at about 3:49 a.m., a Honda Civic was traveling east on Fifth Street making a left turn at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Avenue. At the same time, a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was driving south on Mt. Vernon Avenue. The driver of the pickup truck, Jeffrey Lukes, 37, of Rialto did not stop at the red signal and collided with the Honda Civic. The 56-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A small child passenger in the Honda Civic was transported to a local hospital with major injuries and is listed in critical condition.
Lukes fled the scene on foot, but was later arrested and charged with homicide. At this point in the investigation, it appears alcohol was a factor in this collision.
The collision is still under investigation and anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Dan Acosta or Sergeant Jeff Harvey at (909) 384-5792.
